Terms of Use
These terms are an agreement between you and Javon Taffe, an independent software developer based in the United Kingdom ("we", "us"), covering your use of the Protocol app. By downloading or using Protocol, you agree to them.
1. Protocol is not medical advice
Please read this section carefully — it matters more than the rest.
Protocol is a tracking and organisation tool. It helps you record the supplements you have chosen to take, when you take them, and how much you have left.
- Protocol does not provide medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment.
- The supplement information, timing suggestions, and interaction notes shown in the app are general educational information drawn from published research. They describe commonly reported properties of supplements in general — they are not advice about you, your health, or your circumstances.
- Interaction notes are not a complete or authoritative list of interactions, and they are general information, not tailored to your medications, health conditions, pregnancy, or anything else specific to you, although some mention medicines or conditions in general terms.
- Nothing in the app is personal advice to take, stop, combine, or change the dose of any supplement or medicine. Doses and cut-offs shown come from published research and are reference figures only.
Always consult a doctor, pharmacist, or other qualified health professional before starting, stopping, or changing any supplement — especially if you take medication, have a health condition, or are pregnant or breastfeeding. Never disregard professional medical advice because of something shown in Protocol.
2. Licence
We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to use Protocol on Apple devices that you own or control, in line with Apple's App Store terms. You may not copy, modify, distribute, sell, reverse-engineer, or misrepresent the app or its content, except where the law permits.
3. Protocol Pro (in-app purchase)
- Protocol is free to download with a limited feature set. Protocol Pro is a one-time, non-refundable-by-us in-app purchase (Protocol Pro is not a subscription; see section 3A for Protocol+) that unlocks the full feature set on the device's App Store account.
- The purchase is processed by Apple. Pricing is shown in the app in your local currency before you buy.
- Refunds are handled by Apple, not by us, under Apple's standard App Store refund process (reportaproblem.apple.com). We have no ability to issue App Store refunds directly.
- If you reinstall the app or move to a new device on the same Apple Account, use Restore purchases on the paywall screen to restore Pro at no charge.
- We may change the price of Protocol Pro for future purchasers, and may reasonably evolve which features sit in the free and Pro tiers, but features you have paid to unlock will not be taken away from you.
3A. Protocol+ (auto-renewing subscription)
- What it is. Protocol+ is an optional, auto-renewing subscription that adds live interaction checks to Protocol. It is separate from Protocol Pro. Pro is a one-time purchase and is not affected by whether you subscribe to Protocol+.
- Plans and price. Protocol+ is offered monthly and annually, with the price shown in your local currency in the app before you subscribe. The price you see at confirmation is the price you pay.
- Billing. Payment is charged to your Apple Account at confirmation of purchase. The subscription renews automatically for the same period at the then-current price unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Your account is charged for renewal within 24 hours before the end of the current period.
- Managing and cancelling. You can manage or cancel at any time in your device's Settings → your name → Subscriptions. Cancelling stops future renewals. You keep Protocol+ until the end of the period you have already paid for. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription.
- Refunds. Payments and refunds are handled by Apple, not by us, under Apple's standard process (reportaproblem.apple.com). We cannot issue App Store refunds directly. Nothing in these terms limits any rights you have under UK consumer law, including any right to cancel that applies to digital content.
- Price changes. We may change the price of Protocol+ for future renewals. Apple will notify you and, where required, ask for your consent before the new price applies. If you do not agree, cancel before the renewal date.
- Restoring. If you reinstall the app or move to a new device using the same Apple Account, use Restore purchase to restore an active subscription at no charge.
- What Protocol+ includes. Live checks of the supplements in your stack against a third-party reference database, with links to sources. We may add, change or remove Protocol+ features over time. We will not remove a feature that is part of Protocol Pro because of a change to Protocol+.
- Requires a connection. Live checks need an internet connection. Without one, the app falls back to the interaction notes bundled in the app, and everything else keeps working.
- Third-party information. Live findings come from Examine.com via our interaction-check service. They are provided as general reference information, "as is". We do not control that content, we do not guarantee it is complete, current or error-free, and Examine.com does not endorse, certify or partner with Protocol or its claims.
- Not medical advice. Live findings are subject to the same limits as every other interaction note in section 1: they are not personal medical advice and do not replace a doctor or pharmacist.
- If your subscription ends. Live checks stop. Your supplements, logs and Protocol Pro features are unaffected.
- Your data. For how supplement names are handled when you use live checks, see the Privacy Policy, section 3.3.
4. Your data
Protocol stores your data on your device only, as described in our Privacy Policy. Because there is no account or cloud sync, you are responsible for your own data: deleting the app deletes your data, and we cannot recover it. Your device's standard iCloud/device backup is the way to preserve it. If you subscribe to Protocol+, the names of the supplements in your stack are sent, without any identifier, to our interaction-check service as described in the Privacy Policy.
5. Acceptable use
You agree to use Protocol only for lawful, personal purposes and not to attempt to interfere with, exploit, or misuse the app or any connected service (such as the barcode lookup service).
6. No warranty
Protocol is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy of content, or uninterrupted operation. Supplement and interaction information may be incomplete, out of date, or inapplicable to you. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we exclude all implied warranties.
7. Limitation of liability
Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud, or anything else that cannot be excluded under the law of England and Wales.
Subject to that, we are not liable for: (a) any loss or damage arising from your reliance on information displayed in the app; (b) health outcomes connected to your supplement choices; (c) loss of data; or (d) any indirect or consequential loss. Our total liability to you for all claims connected with the app is limited to the amount you paid us for the app in the 12 months before the claim arose (i.e. at most the price of Protocol Pro).
8. Apple
These terms are between you and us, not Apple. Apple has no obligation to provide support or maintenance for Protocol and is not responsible for addressing any claims relating to it. Apple is a third-party beneficiary of these terms and may enforce them against you.
9. Changes and termination
We may update these terms from time to time; the current version will always be at protocolapp.app/terms with its effective date. Continuing to use the app after a change means you accept the updated terms. We may withdraw the app or discontinue features where we have good reason, subject to section 3 (paid features are not taken away from paying users while the app remains available).
10. Governing law
These terms, and any dispute arising from them or from your use of Protocol, are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have exclusive jurisdiction — except that if you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland you may also bring proceedings in your local courts, and nothing in these terms affects your statutory consumer rights.
